Glossary of Terms

aggregate - crushed stone or pebbles added to concrete mix. Aggregate size and type of stone in concrete should be based on total thickness of pour, desired strength and finish characteristics.

efflorescence - deposition of salts on surface of concrete resulting from chemical impurities in sand, aggregate or other contaminants in concrete mix. May also result from water-borne minerals or impurities deposited if water leeches through concrete pores then dries on surface.

laitance - condition which may occur if concrete is mixed too wet causing cement in mix to rise to surface as concrete cures. A residue of cement dust will be deposited on the surface, and additionally may cause spalling as concrete mix will become cement deficient.
